PEAK MEDIA MARKETING

Importance of a Digital Marketing Strategy for Small Business

Importance of Digital Presence is here for good!

A couple of years ago the Coronavirus pandemic locked us all down and while we were social distancing, the internet brought us closer together through social media we all stayed (sane) in touch as best we could and it worked out really, really well for Just East, Deliveroo and Takeaways.

The power of the World Wide Web is all around us in every corner of our lives and the genie is never, ever going back in the bottle.

Being a Generation X’r makes it easy for us and the Boomers who came before us to disregard social media as something that replaced Friends Reunited for free and with rose tinted spectacles. We look back and remember the days of “back in the day” when we would rely on local newspaper advertising as the main way of marketing local businesses and the internet was just a thing for early adopters sat in Internet Cafes surfing the web. Then along came Google and Facebook and the internet really started to become mainstream and the masses got involved.

Do small local businesses need digital marketing?

It means that as we go into 2023 that consumerism has changed and where people used to call the local carpet shop they had seen advertised in the local paper every week for years, now they go online and check google “Carpet Shops Near Me” or “Carpet Shops (Insert town name here)” and then they check the websites of all the top listings. In many cases they don’t quite understand the difference between the sponsored ads at the top of Google but they click away and shortlist a few that they like. Then they check the social media sites to see how they look in Facebook and Instagram and then they read their reviews and make more informed decisions based on a multitude of information that digital marketing channels have made available to us like never before.

So it means that even small businesses and sole trader tradesmen who have never in the past had to “bother with any of that” because they all relied on word of mouth, they all have to change and quite simply keep up or get left behind. Just like Blockbuster Video and Netflix. Be more Netflix. Be less Woolworths.

Then what does a small business need to do so as to be visible and credible as a company? They never wanted to have to market themselves online, when in their minds advertising is something done by Saachi and Sacchi and a million miles away from being a local business just outside of the Peak District.

How do I know if digital marketing is going to work?

The really good news is that there are some really low cost digital solutions; you can get started for a few hundred pounds a month, and before you fall off your chair and need a hand up off the floor… Everything in marketing is designed to make more money back than what you spend on it. It’s very measure of success is called ROAS, which is “Return On Advertising Spend.”

This is why it is vital for a small businesses to make a marketing budget available, right from the start, so you don’t have to play catch up. If you find that you do need to play catch up then you’ll need a solid plan to guide you through the quick wins and then the medium to long term plan. Your strategy will need to be in keeping with your own business plan and business goals.
